The country is home to many different people including the Dogon, who are world-renowned for their artwork - a trek through their tribal areas is a fascinating experience. Mali is also home to legendary Timbuktu, once a thriving city on the trans-Saharan trade route. When an alternate sea route was discovered, Timbuktu, and its sister city, Djenne, faded into decline - today they are intriguing destinations for curious travellers who want to get way, way off the beaten track.
