Burkina Faso adeptly satisfies wish-lists of curious, adventurous travellers. From the sultry streets of its rhythmically named capital city Ouagadougou to the waterfalls and hippo pods in the country’s southwest rainforests, the music and markets, attractive old quarters and seldom-explored countryside make landlocked Burkina a place of unexpected pleasures. There are constants however: the multi-ethnic, multi-faith people share a happily gregarious character, natural storytellers with a rich musical heritage and Africa’s most important film festival. Much of the country’s pleasures lie in the distinct character of its towns, from languid, musical Bobo Dioulasso, a charming, cultured town, to Gorom-Gorom, home to one of Africa’s most striking urban experiences, where visitors stand thunderstruck at the colourful, all-encompassing mayhem of the vast, sprawling market.
