Serengeti & Silverbacks

Combine the amazing wildlife experiences on the East African savannahs with a trek in the forests of Rwanda to visit the mountain gorilla. This is the ultimate wildlife adventure in which we get to meet and interact with a multitude of iconic African wild animals in their natural habitat. Flying into Kigali, our wildlife encounter begins as we journey into the jungle and come face-to-face with the mountain gorillas. The opportunity to encounter these gentle and contemplative creatures up close is sure to be something you'll remember forever. Lake Nakuru welcomes us with flocks of pink flamingos resplendently feeding on the soda lake in the midst of the Great Rift Valley. The Masai Mara and the adjoining Serengeti National Park make up one of nature’s great playgrounds, where large herds of zebras, wildebeests and gazelles mingle amidst elephants and giraffes, all the while looking out for their erstwhile predators – lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas. The fabled Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara provide more incredible sightings.

Optional Extras

We have chosen a selection of some great optional activities to enhance your travel experience. You will need to cover any additional costs yourself. The below list is not exhaustive and should be used as a guide only. Prices are approximate and are for entrance only and don’t include transport to and from the sites or local guides unless indicated. All activities are subject to availability and it may not be possible to do all the activities listed in the time available at each destination.
Where activities are considered medium or high risk, we work with operators whose safety and credentials we have sighted and assessed. This means that it is possible that you may find the same activity cheaper with another operator on the ground, however we cannot vouch for the safety or quality of that operator. Activities not listed below have not been assessed by us and as such our staff and leaders are unable to assist you with booking these activities. The decision to partake in any activity not listed is at your own discretion and risk.

What to know

Fitness

You do not need any real fitness for this safari besides the ability to get in and out of the safari vehicles. However please note that the roads, particularly in Kenya, are in quite poor condition and you may experience a fair amount of bouncing around.

As there are several different gorilla families that can be visited, the fitness level required for the gorilla trek is not as important as it would be for a similar activity in Uganda. You will be assigned to a trekking group on the day of your trek and your fitness level will be taken into account when determining which gorilla family you are allocated.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations may be required for this trip. Please talk to your doctor about the up-to-date information for this region.  We're travel experts, not doctors and defer to the medicos when it comes to inoculations.

Important Information

Our ground operator will collect and keep one copy of the key pages in your passport in the unlikely event of an emergency. Please bring this along to the initial group meeting.

ROAD CONDITIONS AND INFRASTRUCTURE IN AFRICA:
Roads in Africa are often in very poor condition, which makes it hard on vehicles. Our vehicles are serviced regularly and are generally in good condition, but breakdowns can and do happen. The infrastructure in Africa is not always what we are used to and travelling on their roads can sometimes be very bumpy experiences. The travelling times indicated in our Trip Notes are just a rough guide and is dependent on various factors that may be outside our control, such as road conditions, weather and time spent at borders. LUGGAGE ALLOWANCE:
Please keep your luggage to a minimum. One small soft-sided bag plus a day pack (no more than 15-20kgs per person) is essential - NO HARD CASE SUITCASES. FLIGHTS:
As an arrival transfer is included, please ensure the correct details are provided to Peregrine prior to your departure. A representative will then meet you at Kigali International Airport on arrival.

Your flight must arrive into Kigali propr to 2.30pm in order for the drive to Ruhengeri to take place in daylight. We do not permit driving from Kigali to Ruhengeri by night, as the meandering roads make it unsafe to do so.

If you are leaving the tour in Arusha, please ensure you do not book your departure flight out of Arusha Airport (ARK) or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) prior to 3.30pm. (Departure transfer in Arusha not included but can be arranged at an additional cost, please contact your Travel Agent)

If you are finishing your tour in Nairobi, please ensure you do not book your departure flight out of Nairobi International Airport (NBO) prior to 8.30pm. On arrival back at Nairobi, you will be dropped off at the Peregrine hotel or airport. Please advise Peregrine prior to departure of your drop off location.

Your international flight from Kigali to Nairobi on Day 4 is NOT included. Please ensure this flight is not booked to depart Kigali prior to 2.00pm. Please ensure Peregrine have your flight details so transfers can be provided on departure from Kigali and on arrival in Nairobi.

DRIVE TIMES:

For the latest updated itinerary please visit our website: www.peregrineadventures.com Please note that while we operate successful trips in this region throughout the year, some of the changes that may occur in our itineraries could be due to inclement weather and common seasonal changes to timetables and transportation.
