Franklin River Rafting

The Franklin River carves its way through some of the most beautiful, rugged and inaccessible country in the world. Its significance was recognised in 1982 when it was listed as a World Heritage Area. On your expedition you will experience surging rapids, tranquil gorges and pristine forests of myrtle, leatherwood and the ancient huon pine. Platypus, wallabies, quolls (marsupial tiger cats), cormorants and white breasted sea eagles are often encountered. Negotiating the untamed waters of the Franklin is one of the worlds true adventures. This five day expedition on the Lower Franklin finishes with a spectacular seaplane flight to Strahan, which allows us to spend additional time on the river.

Itinerary

Day Number(s) Title
1 Arrive in Hobart in the morning. Drive to Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. Overnight stay in Queenstown.
2 Morning safety briefing followed by full day rafting through Propsting Gorge, Trojans rapids to Rock Island Bend, then tackle the famous Newland Cascades.
3 Leave the quartzite gorges of the Middle Franklin and enter the limestone country of the lower reaches where tranquil pools are broken by the occasional large rapid.
4 Drift by limestone cliffs and strange rock formations with the river widening into a quiet flow. Later in the day we will tackle the unexpected Double Fall before our last camp.
5 Our final hours on the Franklin are spent drifting along this mighty river, carried along by the huge volume of water that makes the Gordon Tasmania's largest waterway. At Sir John Falls our seaplane will take us back to Strahan on the west coast. A bus trip back to Hobart completes our journey.
