Top 6 canyons in the world

Brendan van Son takes you down, down, down into six of the world's most incredible canyons. Head into the centre of the earth, where sunsets and waterfalls take on a whole new meaning.

The Copper Canyon
Mexico's copper canyon is somehow missed by many travellers who head to Mexico.  Sure, the majority of people go to Mexico in the search of sun, sand and perhaps some ancient ruins, however, to miss out on the Copper Canyon in Mexico is like missing out on Machu Picchu in Peru.  The power of this great canyon will consume you and if you're lucky enough to see it during sunset you'll surely be blown away but a beautiful Mexican sky.

The Zambezi Gorge

Most likely the most beautiful canyon in Africa, the Zambezi Gorge is also home to the famous Victoria Falls.  As if the thunderous cascades were not enough power for one place the canyon glows in majestic supremacy.  A trip to Southern Africa could not be complete without a couple of days visiting this wonderous place.

The Grand Canyon
Obviously one wouldn't name a canyon the "Grand Canyon" unless it were, well, grand. And unlike the Rio Grande this great American treasure definitely lives up to the billing.  The canyon is rich in colour, depth, and history.  Furthermore, it might be one of the greatest places on earth to gaze at the stars.  Although most people just make a quick visit to the edge to take a photo or two, a great Grand Canyon journey should include at least a day or two hiking or riding a mule through its depths.

Wulingyuan Canyon
A maze of tall sandstone pillars the Wulingyuan Canyon almost appears to be a site seen on another planet.  This lush and misty region of China was the country's first national park.  It is also home to the world's tallest external elevator which mean that you don't need to do any extreme hiking to be rewarded with incredible views. 

The Colca Canyon

The Peruvian entry to the list is actually the 2nd or 3rd deepest canyon in the world depending on whose statistics you listen to.  The canyon is well over twice as deep as the Grand Canyon and while standing on its edge you will feel it.  Not only is the canyon deep, but it is also home to the largest flying bird in the world: the condor.  Get to the canyon's edge early in the morning and you will be treated by a show from these great birds as they soar along the canyon walls, sometimes they get within mere meters of onlookers

1, Havasu Canyon
Havasu Canyon may be America's great hidden gem.  An off-shoot canyon of the Grand Canyon, Havasu Canyon is home to some of the brightest blue water you will ever see and nearly every step you take you are encountered with a new picturesque waterfall.  The contrast of colours in this red canyon is nearly as amazing as the fact that a place so dry can sprout so much water.  The canyon remains "off the radar" since it is a 16 kilometer hike each way to get to the waterfalls that make it so special.  However, every step of the hike is made worth it by the incredible eden-like surroundings you'll encounter at the end.
