Why we love it: Tibet

It's time for another in our popular Why We Love It series. This time we're taking you inside Tibet. These blogs were all written by passionate Peregrine staffers who fell in love with a particular place around the world.

Take a journey into this exotic and increasingly popular destination:

My journey through Tibet started with a most spectacular flight over the Everest region into Lhasa. The mountain scenery was just awesome. Absolutely breathtaking. I knew at this point I was in for an incredible experience.

One of the first things I noticed was the people. They were so colourfully dressed and vibrant, and had such a beautiful nature. Many were spinning prayer wheels to accumulate wisdom, merit and good karma. In Lhasa there's no mistaking the greatest monument in all Tibet, the iconic Potala Palace. The original home of the Dalai Lama and past seat of Tibetan religious and political power is an incredible architectural feat and was a real highlight for me.

The Friendship Highway was right up there too. It’s a spectacular road that crosses over many high mountain passes. The altitude makes normal tasks a little more difficult than usual, but that was all part of the experience. In Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet, we visited the Tashilhunpo Monastery, the Panchen Lama’s true home and one of Tibet's most active monasteries. Having the opportunity to observe the monks going about their daily rituals made me feel very privileged.

Everest base camp was awe-inspiring too. After negotiating a series of zigzags to the top of the pass, the sensational views of the towering north face of Mount Everest made the journey all worthwhile. One word covers it: Wow. I left this once forbidden land feeling a mixture of emotions, but overall I felt fortunate to have experienced some of the most beautiful people and scenery in the world. Tibet will always be special to me.
