An odd spectacle for the uninitiated, Burma’s Golden Rock at Kyaiktiyo Pagoda is in fact a revered Buddhist pilgrimage site. And the pagoda perched on top, though it doesn’t look particularly imposing, stands at an impressive 7.3 metres tall.
Legend has it that the rock – said to be recovered from the ocean floor - is held in place by a single strand of the Buddha’s enshrined hair. Pilgrims who visit the site on three separate occasions in the same year are expected, according to legend, to be blessed with prosperity and respect.
As enigmatic a country as they come, Burma’s legends and landscapes are waiting to be unlocked. Experience the Kyaiktio Pagoda and more with Peregrine.
