Africa's other Big Five

When planning a trip to Africa, you'll become familiar with the concept of the Big Five: lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard. They're called the Big Five for the difficulty in hunting them, rather than their size.

On my recent Botswana in Depth (Reverse) trip, our leader Spokes explained that some people come up with their own version of the Big Five while on safari. He said past groups had come up with The Small Five and The Fast Five. And sure enough, by the end of the trip we had devised ours:

The Butt Five
These were chosen because every time we tried to get a nice photo all we could see was their…ahem…rear ends! It took a lot of patience, but eventually we got them to turn around for us. But we really did see far more of these animals than we would have liked!

1. Zebra

2. Buffalo

3. Elephant

4. Wildebeest

5. Hippo

The Cute 5

In between all the "woahs" and "arghs!" there are a lot of "awwwws" to be had on safari. We were lucky enough to be there in spring, when all the babies had come out to play. It was hard to narrow the list down to just five, but rest assured every time we saw one of these animals it was impossible to put the camera down.

And as a side note - although warthogs aren't normally considered cute, they are really one of the funniest animals you'll ever see. We couldn't resist putting them on our list because of the way their tails stick straight up in the air as they trot away.

1. Impala

2. Warthog

3. Lion cub

4. Baby elephant

5. Lilac Breasted Roller
