Empowering women and girls in Sierra Leone

More than 60 million girls around the world don’t attend school. This is an alarming statistic, but it doesn't have to be this way.

One Girl focuses on empowering women and girls in Sierra Leone to create change in their communities. It believes that education and economic empowerment are the tools that will help women tackle the issues they face.

A recent fundraiser was held with the aim of raising enough money to send 150 girls back to school and build a classroom in an overcrowded high school.

Peregrine donated a travel voucher to the auction, and we were extremely touched to discover that the team had created a special video for us.

Chantelle and David, co-founders of One Girl said, "We've created a short 1-minute video for Peregrine Adventures to say thank you for your support over the last two years. I know sometimes it can be difficult to see the difference that a travel voucher's can make, so we really wanted to spell it out for you."

Peregrine Managing Director, Glenyce Johnston, said "How sensational that an organisation such as One Girl exists, looking after the interests of women and girls in Sierra Leone. We were honoured to be asked to support the work they are doing.

Peregrine has always promoted responsible tourism, and One Girl shares many of the same principles as we do when it comes to empowering local communities. I was delighted to see what a difference even the smallest donation can make, and was really touched by the video Chantelle and Dave put together!”

When a girl is educated, she’ll get married later and have fewer, healthier children. For every year she stays in school she’ll increase her income by at least 10%. With the money she earns, she’ll invest 90% of it back into her family.

If you'd like to be part of this inspiring initiative, head over to the One Girl website and make a donation.
