Michelle Ouw, leader of the Peregrine team for the Oxfam Trailwalker event, talks us through the team’s preparation for the gruelling 100km, 48-hour walk for charity through Australian bush in April.
How’s the preparation going?
Great! We’ve all been doing some training walks and we recently had our first walk together as a team. We tackled 22km and faced THE Hacketts Road for the first time, at a 30 degree incline - tough going, but we fared pretty well. We’ve all done our fair share of trekking so hopefully are in okay shape. Plenty more preparation to go though – we’ll be doing more treks together in the weeks ahead, including some night walking.
We’re doing well. We’re on course and up to $1700. Our target is $6000, so the next couple of months will be when we really go for it. We’ve been selling baked goods in the office, including a raffle for a gingerbread house I made just before Christmas (you can see it on Facebook here) and we’ve got a silent auction and market planned in the weeks ahead. Of course, people are welcome to donate online as well – every cent goes towards fighting poverty worldwide.
Is there a bit of competition within the team to be the first to finish?
No! It’s truly a team event. There are checkpoints en route to ensure every team still has its full complement of members. But regardless of that, we intend to walk together every step of the way – it will be a tough event, so mutual support will be really important.
We’ve got 30 hours listed as our target on the Oxfam website. That would definitely be a good time, and will require some serious training. There’s another motivation for beating 30 hours however – that’s what the previous Peregrine team, which included our Managing Director, clocked in at!
Your favourite trek?
Has to be Everest Base Camp & Kala Patar. It was just incredible to be at this amazing place – the history, camaraderie, and the extraordinary landscapes made it an unforgettable experience.
Good luck Michelle, Karly, Kate and Jill! You can see follow the team’s progress and donate online here.
