Japan
The poetry of its icons is enticement enough to lure travellers to Japan: the promise of the cherry blossom, the serenity of the shrine, the soothing tranquillity of zen gardens, geishas and elaborate tea ceremonies. Head to Kyoto for a full fix of these, all set amidst the most romantic architecture. But don’t stop there. Tokyo too has its oases, its shrines and gardens, but they are set in a non-stop, pulsating firecracker of a city. This is where the rest of the world takes it trends from, as vital as cities get, relentlessly cutting edge, addictively different, with the most dizzying of streetscapes and a greater sense of fun than a dozen other urban melting pots could muster. The countryside plays a massive role in the Japanese psyche – its most famous face, Mount Fuji, is practically a national obsession, and a trip up the perfect cone is an unmissable Japanese highlight. Afterwards, get a feel for the rural Japan with a soaking in an onsen or overnighting in a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn. A night-time sip of sake while wearing yukata robes, futon for a bed – after a visit here, you’ll have more poetic icons of Japan to add to that list.
