Start out early from Quito and journey into the ‘Avenue of the Volcanoes’. Witness the spectacular snow-capped peak of Cotopaxi, the world’s highest active volcano at 5897 metres. Head to the cauldron-like Quilotoa volcano, a broad caldera with a brilliant lake at its centre. En route, you’ll visit the indigenous Kichwa people of Tigua who are renowned for their vibrant art painted on sheepskin canvases.

Head for Cotopaxi National Park this morning and hike around Limpiopungo Lake. Keep an eye and an ear out for the various species of highland birds that make their home at this altitude (3840m). Take in views of the pristine lake, with Cotopaxi looming above.

Due to the eruption of Cotopaxi Volcano in August 2015 the Cotopaxi National Park remains closed.
The itinerary on this page has been rerouted accordingly to avoid staying in the National Park.
