Why we love this trip

  • Enjoy a day out on tranquil Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable body of water, and explore the floating islands crafted by the indigenous Uru locals

  • Be part of Puno's Virgen de La Candelaria Festival, one of Peru's most colourful and important annual events

  • Amid resolute funeral towers and unfinished tombs, the pre-Incan burial ground of Sillustani offers a solemn lesson in history and is an amazing site to explore on foot

  • Get into the celebratory spirit at a spectacular Peruvian festival and be dazzled by fireworks exploding across the night sky on the eve of this celebration

Is this trip right for you?

  • At over 3,800 metres above sea level, it can take a bit of time to adjust to the high altitude in Puno. Some people aren’t affected at all, but if you are, be sure to drink plenty of water and take it easy. If possible, it might be a good idea to visit other parts of Peru (such as Lima or Arequipa) before arriving in Puno. This will allow time to acclimatise to the increasing altitude. Please see the ‘Health’ section of the trip notes for more information about altitude sickness.

  • As this is a religious festival, we please ask that you are respectful of the belief system and are modest in your approach.

  • As the festival is one of Peru’s largest, thousands of people descend on Puno for the week and the city can get extremely busy. This is a great way to rub shoulders with locals, but be prepared for big crowds.

  • Puno can get very cold in the evenings so please bring warm clothing with you, including a coat and base layers.

  • It’s important to wear sunscreen and other sun protection, as well as to drink plenty of water.

  • As the festival is run annually, this trip only operates once a year around the main parade.
