Is this trip right for you?

  • Many of the destinations on this itinerary are rainforest, and the weather can turn suddenly. Layers and a waterproof jacket are essential.

  • You'll get more out of the trip if you have a reasonable level of fitness. You don't need to be a professional athlete, but should be able to walk 3–4 hours and climb in and out of small boats.

  • The cave tour on Day 3 does not require crawling or vertical climbing, but there is one moderately strenuous stretch (approximately 25 minutes long), some loose rocks and some steep parts. Informative stops are made along the way to break things up.

  • Much of Vancouver Island's food is imported from the mainland, so be prepared for some higher prices than you might expect.

Take the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to the harbour town of Nanaimo (approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes). This is Vancouver's second largest city, next to Victoria. Drive across the centre of Vancouver Island to Tofino (approximately 2–3 hours, not including stops). Stop at Cathedral Grove for a walk in one of the most accessible stands of giant Douglas fir trees on Vancouver Island. Here visitors can stroll through a network of trails under the shadow of these towering beauties, some of which are more than 800 years old. A lunch stop in Port Alberni will be made on the way to Tofino. Tofino was named the best surf town in North America in Outside Magazine's 2010 Editors' Choice awards, which gives an idea of its calibre as a coastal destination. It's also a great spot for storm watching and whale watching. Tonight's accommodation is right on the water, so enjoy a stroll along the beach before heading out for dinner.
