This independent trip offers a full-day tour of the former kingdom that flourished between the 11th and 13th centuries and produced over 4000 religious structures – more than half of which remain today. Exploring the colourful market of Nyaung, then venture to the plains where the glory of Ananda Pahto and Dhammayangyi temples awaits.

The sights of Bagan will be explored from dawn to dusk. Nyaung U's lively market contrasts with the eerie silence of the plains beyond, which are littered with over 4000 structures, including Gawdawpalin, Thatbyinnyu, Ananda and Shwezigon. The names of the temples and pagodas here are a testament to the glorious past of the region.
The area is also famous for producing lacquer-ware and sand paintings that are available in the stalls amidst the ruins.
You may be able to do some of today’s exploration by horse and cart, and weather permitting; you will also enjoy a breathtaking sunset view from one of the ruins.

For many travellers a hot air balloon experience is one of the highlights of their time in Bagan. This optional activity is a possibility for the mornings of Day 2 or Day 3, depending on availability. We recommend booking well in advance with Peregrine to secure a space. There are Premium and Standard service options available.

If you have pre-booked this activity you will be picked up and driven to the launch site. You will then float over the hundreds of stupas and temples below, to watch at the morning glow illuminates this breathtaking landscape. Flights last between on average for 45 minutes (however they can range from 20 minutes to 1 hour depending on local conditions). After landing be treated to a celebratory glass of champagne and light breakfast. You will then be returned to your hotel. The experience is approximately 2.5 - 3 hours in total.
