  • Why we love France

    • This is a France of Breil Sur Roya, the hamlet of crumbling medieval cottages and faded, painted wine advertisements on a bend of the River Roya. A France of lavender fields, purple and brilliant in the Aix en Provence sun. A France of tiny wineshops and cheese purveyors, tucked away in stumbled-upon alleys in Crillon le Brave or Séguret or Vaison-la-Romaine
    • Enjoy lunch in a restaurant carved from a limestone hillside. Where waterwheels turn lazily in languid river currents and a stop for coffee can last a morning
    • And you don’t have to be Cadel Evans to enjoy a roll through the French countryside. Even if you haven’t found yourself in the saddle for a year (or decade) or two, our cycle trips are another great way to poke around
    • The French certainly know how to live life well, but for many the desserts and sweets of the Dordogne region are the best found anywhere in the country. The region is famous for its truffles and Perigord walnuts, I head for the truffle and chocolate sponge cake, and local praline and nougat.’
    • France is a walker’s paradise and a highlight for many travellers is in the French Alps around Brevente, a gorgeous circular walk with stunning views of Mont Blanc.

    Photo c/o Decar66, Flickr

    By James Shackell

European cycling is like riding through an old movie: the warm Provencal sun on your face, pedalling down old country lanes and sun-dappled roads, stopping only for a boutique wine tasting or a spot of French cheese.

    Southern France,...

Lights, camera, travel: 7 iconic film sets you should visit this year

    By James Shackell

“There’s no place like home,” Judy Garland says in the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz, before clicking her heels and picturing sleepy Kansas. And while these words are enshrined in cinema history, we think Dorothy might have had a different approach to travel if she’d seen...

    Feast cookalong: Lemon brulee tart

I’ll be totally honest – this tart was absolutely delicious, but it was despite me, not because of me. Which says a lot about the robustness of Matthew’s recipes. Let me explain – I had three baking projects on the go as I was cooking this tart: a chocolate cake for a helpful...
