Cycling the Loire Valley (self-guided)

Blois

Trip rating
  • Castle-hop your way through the lush Loire Valley on board two wheels. Pedal at a relaxed pace along flat terrain while the toughest decision you’ll have to make all day is which wine to have with your cheese plate before dinner!

    Itinerary

    Day 1 - Blois

    • Your trip will start with your arrival in the town of Blois. While at your discretion, we recommend arriving and departing by train where possible within Europe as this method of transport has minimal carbon emissions.
    • We suggest arriving early to make the most of exploring the charming town of Blois. Your bike and helmet will be waiting for you at the joining hotel.
    • After settling in to your hotel, we suggest taking a stroll along Blois’ paved streets, which are punctuated with staircases, and visiting its wonderful château - once home to French kings including Louis XII, Francois I, Henry III and Henry IV. It was at this very chateau that Joan of Arc came in 1429 to be blessed before heading off to drive out the English from Orleans.
    • This building is a perfect example of how French architecture evolved between the Middle Ages and the 17th century.

    Day 2 - Blois - Amboise

    • Today you will embark on your first day of cycling. Setting off from Blois, you will follow small countryside routes until you reach the chateau of Chaumont, which overlooks the Loire River. In this majestic park there is a ‘garden festival’, where contemporary garden designers display their work in an English-style garden.
    • Your route then continues towards Amboise, a royal city where Leonardo da Vinci lived during his final days. Through the superb garden of Clos Lucé, you can discover the prestigious history of the region and see models of the various machines designed by Leonardo. Amboise is your base for the next two nights. (Cycling - 44 km)
    Hotel le Blason or similar
    Breakfast | Dinner

    Day 3 - Amboise - Chenonceaux - Amboise

    • After crossing the forest of Amboise, you will reach the famous chateau of Chenonceau (spelt differently from the village - Chenonceaux) that straddles the Cher River. One of the most famous rivalries in French history - that of Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici, played out here.
    • Enjoy a walk in the heart of the Diane de Poitiers‘s garden, then in Catherine de Medici’s one. Take a breather under the shadow of one of the huge trees in the park and listen out for the peaceful sounds of the rolling river, while you absorb stories about the rivalry of these two powerful women.
    • In the afternoon you will ride back to Amboise. (Cycling - 38 km)
    Hotel le Blason or similar
    Breakfast | Dinner

    Day 4 - Amboise – Cheverny

    • Today you will ride on routes through the countryside and via typical villages to reach the medieval chateau of Fougère sur Bièvre, a perfect example of traditional 15th century building art.
    • Along the way you will encounter some small private chateaux set in lush surroundings such as Chateau de Troussay, before arriving at your final destination - the famous Chateau of Cheverny. (Cycling - 50km)
    Hotel St Hubert or similar
    Breakfast | Dinner

    Day 5 - Cheverny – Blois

    • During this last stage of your cycling adventure, you will get to discover the famous and sumptuously-furnished Château of Cheverny before reaching the prestigious Château of Chambord – one of the most prominent in the Loire Valley.
    • With 440 rooms and built during the reign of King Francis I, this is a real masterpiece of the French Renaissance period.
    • You will then continue on your way and return to Blois. (Cycling - 40km)
    Hotel Le Monarque or similar
    Breakfast | Dinner

    Day 6 - Blois

    • Your trip will come to an end this morning after breakfast in Blois.

    Cycling the Loire Valley (self-guided)

This was our first Peregrine and cycling tour. We liked the idea of the self-guided trip as I am particularly not a cyclist and did not want the pressure of holding up a group. Loved the experience right from the start, where our information pack was presented to us without asking at our first hotel. The bikes provided were in excellent condition and the maps provided sufficient to get us around. I had chosen the Loire Valley as it was not too hilly and provided many opportunities to cycle through the country and villages. Tracks and roads were good quality and the experience thoroughly enjoyable. Hotels and meals were good and great value even providing well for me, a vegetarian. Great to know our bags were getting transported from place to place and not getting as wet as us! Would recommend the experience to anyone.

European cycling is like riding through an old movie: the warm Provencal sun on your face, pedalling down old country lanes and sun-dappled roads, stopping only for a boutique wine tasting or a spot of French cheese.

    Feast cookalong: Lemon brulee tart

I’ll be totally honest – this tart was absolutely delicious, but it was despite me, not because of me. Which says a lot about the robustness of Matthew’s recipes. Let me explain – I had three baking projects on the go as I was cooking this tart: a chocolate cake for a helpful...
