Iceland Walking & Nature

Westman islands

Trip rating
  • In a country where remarkable landscapes exist at every turn, it’s quite a feat to be known as one of Iceland’s gems. Skaftafell National Park lives within Vatnajokull National Park and was once a private manor farm. It boasts wonderful hiking trails, Europe’s biggest glacier, incomparable views of Iceland’s highest peaks, extensive sand flats and the country’s most varied flora.

    Why we love it

    • Be awed by the Geyser geothermal area – a true testament to the power and beauty of nature
    • Take a ferry to Vestmannaeyjar and walk up a volcano and witness a lava field
    • Visit Eldgja, or 'fire canyon', which is the largest volcanic crater in the world
    • Discover immense glaciers and the Svartifoss Waterfall in Skaftafell National Park
    • Soak in the divine thermal waters of the Blue Lagoon

    Day 1 - Reykjavik

    • Arrive in Reykjavik today, and settle into your hotel.
    • There are no activities planned for today, but if you arrive early we recommend getting out and exploring the world's northernmost capital. Take a trip to the National Museum, boasting a permanent exhibition depicting the history of Iceland from the 9th century to the present day.
    • Meet you your fellow travellers and tour leader at 6pm for a welcome meeting.
    Hotel Klettur or similar

    Day 2 - Golden Circle - Hvolsvollur

    • This morning we will start the day with a walking city tour around Reykjavik. We will visit the old harbour, the city centre, Hallgrimskirkja church and the Pearl.
    • We then hop onto our private minibus to see various places along the famous Golden Circle.
    • Our first stop is Þingvellir (Parliament Plains). This is the location of the oldest parliament of Europe and a geological phenomenon, where the Eurasian and American tectonic plates slowly pull apart.
    • Next up is the Geysir geothermal area for the spouting hot spring that gave the name to this natural phenomenon, and Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall, where on a sunny day you can see a rainbow in the spray above the waterfall.
    • We then continue on to our overnight stay Hvolsvollur where we will spend the next two nights.

    Day 3 - Vestmannaeyjar - Hvolsvollur

    • Today we travel to the south coast and Landeyjahofn harbour where we will leave our vehicle behind and take a 30 minute ferry ride to the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar in Icelandic) which we will explore on foot.
    • The volcanic system of the Westman Islands consists of 70–80 volcanoes, both above and below sea level.
    • We will explore Heimaey, the largest of the Westman Islands and the only one that is inhabited. It is the site of the Heimaey eruption of 1973, during which the Eldfell Volcano (Fire Mountain in English) destroyed part of the town, but at the same time increased the surface of the island by 20%. We will walk up to the crater and explore the new lava field.
    • After our descent we will visit the new exhibition center explaining the 1973 eruption. It tells the story of how the islanders used sea water to halt the advancing lava and hence where able to save their town from complete destruction.
    • There is the possibility to spot puffins and we seek out the places where they might be, however due to the decline in food sightings are not guaranteed.

    Day 4 - Landmannalaugar - Eldgja - Kirkjubaejarklaustur

    • We carry on our Iceland adventure by driving to the magnificent place of Landmannalaugar, surrounded by colorful rhyolite mountains. Landmannalaugar is an extraordinary beautiful oasis in the highlands, featuring amazing mountains and geothermal activity.
    • We will take a hike through lava fields and a geothermal area (approx 2 hours), where we will have the opportunity to take a bath in a natural geothermal pool.
    • From Landmannalaugar we continue through the highlands to Eldgja Canyon ("The Fire Fissure"), which is the largest volcanic canyon in the world.
    • Once in Eldgja we will take a hike through the canyon to beautiful Ófærufoss waterfall (approx 1 hour), just inside Vatnajökull National Park.
    • In the afternoon we drive to Kirkjubaejarklaustur where we stay for the next two nights. Our accommodation for tonight is a farm house that has been converted into a hotel, not far from the village.

Day 5 - Skaftafell National Park - Kirkjubaejarklaustur

    • Depending on the weather we will have the choice of walking trails of varying length and difficulty (approx 2-3 hours).
    • From there we drive to the famous Glacier Lagoon (Jökulsárlón) where we will board a boat for a tour between the floating icebergs. The lagoon was created by the retreating Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier.
    Hotel Geirland or similar

    Day 6 - Reykjavik

    • Today our private transport will take us through the lava fields of the Laki eruption from 1782-1783 to the beautiful scenery of Iceland's South Shore.
    • We will make plenty of stops at Solheimajokull Glacier, the rocks of Reynisdrangar, black sand fields and the waterfalls of Skogafoss and Seljarlandsfoss.
    • There are more options for walking today, for example at Dyrholey Natural Reserve.
    • From there we will make our way back to back Reykjavik.
    Hotel Klettur or similar

    • We will visit boiling mud pools and hot springs before taking a relaxing bath at the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, which is located in a lava field in Grindavik. The waters are rich in minerals like silica and sulfur and the temperature in the bathing and swimming area of the lagoon averages 37–39°C.
    • Upon arrival back into Reykjavik this afternoon you will have some time to explore the city for the last time and join the group on an optional farewell dinner.
