Visas are currently not required for Australian, New Zealand, US, Canadian or UK/EU passport holders wishing to visit Italy. Some EU nationals may travel in Europe using only an identity card, however it is your responsibility to check with the relevant authorities if this applies to you.

Government travel advice

Many governments publish up-to-date travel advice for countries around the world. Information is gleaned from both local and international sources as well as ‘friendly’ governments, and the notices are often on the cautious side. Sometimes there will be conflicting information. For example, the Australian, UK and Canadian governments may agree on the nature of the advice; however, frequently they do not. And sometimes the views expressed by a particular government can be coloured by political considerations. We will monitor these travel advisories closely and may alter itineraries or cancel trips as a result. However, it is also your responsibility to stay informed and form a balanced view. We recommend that you visit the websites or contact the departments listed below. Unless otherwise stated, it is not normally the intention of the relevant government travel advice to dissuade you from travelling. Rather, it is to inform you of where and when you should exercise caution to avoid problems. Please also note that, as a responsible tour operator, we maintain constant links with our ground operators and your safety - at all times - is our paramount concern. Please ensure that you have a current passport well before travelling. It also needs an accurate photo and should be valid for at least six months after you are scheduled to return home. Also check that your airline tickets are in exactly the same name as your passport.


Every Peregrine traveller is required to have comprehensive travel insurance. This covers you for medical costs associated with hospitalisation, emergency travel and repatriation back to your home country. You can arrange your own insurance or we can recommend a policy for you. Remember to bring a copy of your insurance policy with you so your tour leader/guide can record the details at the pre-tour briefing. If you arrive at your destination without travel insurance, you'll need to organise this before you can continue on your Peregrine journey.

Medical preparation

Apart from having travel insurance and being in generally good health, some pre-holiday health preparation is advised. We strongly recommend you visit your doctor to discuss health requirements for your trip. They will advise you regarding the appropriate inoculations and in some places anti-malarial medication may also be required. Some vaccines need to be administered a few weeks before departure so allow plenty of time. Obtain a certificate of vaccination and carry this with you on this trip. A dental checkup is also highly recommended before departure.


Vaccination requirements do change, but generally you do not need vaccinations on this trip.
If vaccinations are required, do not leave them until the last minute. Some should be received at least a month before departure. It is your responsibility to ensure that you obtain any vaccinations or preventative medicines for the countries you are visiting – or any which may be required by your home country upon your return. To find out which, if any, vaccinations are mandatory or recommended for your destination contact your local doctor, immunisation centre or medical centre for up-to-date information.

Travellers from countries other than Australia and New Zealand should contact similar organisations or their travel doctor for advice. General health and vaccination information is available to all travellers at Some vaccines require more than one dose, so arrange for your visit at least 4-6 weeks before you travel.


Carry Your Certificate
You should be issued with an International Certificate of Vaccination booklet that records each vaccination. Always carry this with you on your travels; it could provide essential information for doctors in the event that you fall ill whilst travelling.

Copies of key documents

We recommend that you photocopy the main pages of your passport, your airline ticket, itinerary, insurance policy and credit cards. Keep one set of photocopies with you, separate from the originals. Leave one set of copies at home with family or friends. It is also worth taking some extra passport photos with you.


This trip is graded as a ‘Moderate Walk' and requires a good level of fitness. Please note however that some sections of this walk involve somewhat steep 'ups and 'downs' across varied terrain. The walking paths range from paved man-made tracks to forest and coastal trails. There are also some long staircases so if you are at all unsteady on your feet we highly recommend you also bring a retractable walking pole(s). These are lightweight, easy to pack and can be found in most outdoor equipment shops. Comfortable walking/hiking shoes are essential, along with a small daypack and water bottle.

What to take

General Packing List

Remember - the lighter you travel the better! A soft-sided duffel bag is the ideal form of luggage. It is recommended that you keep your luggage weight around 15kg and certainly no more than 20kg. A small or medium-sized backpack (45-50 litres) is another good option, but preferably one without a frame. Many hotels used in Europe do not have lifts, so you must be able to carry your own luggage.

We operate trips in Europe in spring, summer and the start of autumn. Bear in mind that the weather will vary significantly from place to place. Remember that quality rain gear is essential for any destination - you’ll enjoy your holiday to the fullest if you’re prepared for all kinds of weather! Laundry facilities are available in some destinations.

Walkers should consider bringing a walking stick or ski poles.

If you are purchasing new footwear for your trip we recommend that you undertake some walking before-hand to ensure that they are comfortable and are the correct size. In any event we advise some preparatory walking before you commence your trip.

Accessing Money


Since the introduction of the euro (€) life has become much easier for travellers, and it is likely you will be using Euro elsewhere on your travels. Money is safest when carried in the form of Travellers Cheques. However, as the popularity of ATMs has increased, so the need for traveller's cheques has diminished. On all our trips you will require additional funds for extra meals, drinks, souvenirs and incidental expenses. Most hotels will accept credit cards to settle any ‘extras’ and the balance of your holiday funds can be split between cash, ATM withdrawals and credit card. As some of our hotels are in rural areas or small villages where you will not always have access to banks or ATMs, we recommend you take about half your estimated needs in euro cash. Cash The simplest solution is to exchange your money into euros at home and bring the cash with you. In addition, you might want to bring a couple of hundred dollars as ‘emergency funds’. Credit Cards Credit cards are fairly widely accepted throughout Europe and are an easy way of settling hotel bills, restaurant accounts etc. Cash Passports Cash Passports are a prepaid travel money card that you charge up before travelling and can be used with Visa merchants and to withdraw money from ATMs. For more information, please see

Spending Money

Clients are responsible for expenses (e.g. meals, transportation or hotel costs) not specified as included in the trip cost but that may be required to get to or from a trip start or end. Other costs to consider are tips, laundry, souvenirs, additional sightseeing and possible delays. It is much better to come with more than you would expect to spend and to end the trip with a surplus, rather than being caught short! It is always useful to carry an additional amount for emergencies, which could happen en route. If there is a medical emergency you are sometimes required to pay at the source and reimbursement will be made later by your insurance company. This is the situation where having a credit card may be useful.

Airport Taxes


There are no locally paid departure taxes payable when leaving Italian airports.


On this trip, we have included gratuities for the essential services that you will receive as part of your tour package. Where applicable, this will cover tips to drivers, specialist local guides, restaurant staff for included meals, porters, bellboys and other hotel staff, including room-cleaning staff.

This amount DOES NOT include a tip for your tour leader, so you may wish to set aside some funds for this. It is customary to tip your tour leader for outstanding service throughout your trip. Tips are greatly appreciated as a gesture of thanks for their professionalism and leadership during your holiday. We are often asked what a reasonable amount might be. The amount is at your discretion, but a sum of €2-€4 per person/per day is a general tipping standard.

You also wish to put aside some money for your own tipping, such as when you are doing our own optional sightseeing or activity that involves local guides and/or drivers or when joining in optional groups meals or dining out on your own. In these instances, we advise you to carry small notes of local currency each day to make tipping easier. The amounts can vary greatly according to destination. Tipping in Europe although not compulsory is a widespread practice. Tips for good service are appreciated, if not expected. The amount depends on your resources, tipping philosophy and the circumstance. In restaurants, look out for the service charges. Tipping is an issue only at restaurants that have waiters and waitresses. If you order your food at a counter, don't tip. At restaurants with table service, menus usually state (at the bottom) if the service is included. If so you don't need to tip, although if you're pleased with the service you can round up a few euros. If the menu states that the service is not included, tip about 10% by rounding up or leaving the change from your bill. Typically, it's better to hand the cash to the waiter than to leave it on the table, particularly in busy places where the wrong party might pocket the change. In some places, you may want to tip in cash even if you pay with your credit card, otherwise your tip may never reach your waiter.

When you're paying for taxis, round up to the next euro on the fare (maximum 10 percent). Use common sense! If you feel like you're being driven in circles or otherwise ripped off, skip the tip.

Carry some change. If you stop at a public WC, you may have to tip the attendant anywhere from a bit of change to €1.

If you're not sure whether (or how much) to tip for a service, ask your tour leader for advice.

While you are travelling

On arrival

This trip starts in Levanto. There are no formal activities planned for day 1, so you may arrive at any time. Please make your own way to the start hotel (please refer to your itinerary for joining hotel name and address). You will meet your Tour Leader and fellow travellers at a welcome meeting on the evening of Day .

By Air
If you are traveling directly to our trip, you can fly into Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino) Airport (airport code: FCO) or Milan’s Malpensa Airport (airport code: MXP) and then catch a domestic flight to the Galileo Galilei Airport at Pisa (airport code PSA), closest to Levanto. From the airport there are hourly trains to the Pisa Centrale Train Station (5 minutes journey – cost €1,20) where you can catch a connecting train to Levanto. Tickets can be bought in the airport train station, located next to the terminal and accessible by a covered walkway. If arriving into Pisa International Airport, there is an airport information desk in the Arrivals Hall, which can provide information on flights as well as tourist information; rail and bus tickets can also be bought here.

From the Pisa Centrale Train Station regular direct InterCity trains to Levanto leave every two hours or so (approx 1 hour and 15 minutes journey - cost €10,20). Alternatively you have to take a Regional train to La Spezia and change there for Levanto (1 hour and 45 minutes journey – cost €7,20).

By Train
Alternatively Levanto is accessible by direct InterCity train from Milan (approx 2 hours and 50 minutes journey – cost €21,00), as well as many indirect services from Florence (approx  3 hours journey, change at Pisa Centrale – cost from €15,00 to €23,00) and Rome (approx 4 hours and 30 minutes journey, change at La Spezia or Firenze and Pisa Centrale – cost from €40,00 to €65,00)

To get to the Hotel Europa (Via Dante, 41 - 19015 Levanto - +39 0187 808126 - walk down the Via Nuova Stazione Ferroviaria from the station until arriving at Corso Roma. Continue straight  into the centre of town for around 600 metres until arriving at the junction with Via Jacopo da Levanto. After another 200 metrse you will arrive at a T-junction with Via Dante.

Train travel in Italy

You may purchase Italian rail tickets from any train station in Italy. In the larger stations, the reservation counters are usually located away from the main departure area. Many stations are equipped with automatic ticket machines, from which you may purchase tickets and reservation coupons for travel in Italy and for principal cross-border routes. The machines accept cash and credit or debit cards with your PIN.

Most major Italian airports have FS (Ferrovie dello Stato, the Italian state railway) desks, where it’s possible to obtain schedule information and purchase tickets. There are also countless travel agencies and FS ticket outlets throughout Florence, Rome, Milan and greater Italy, which provide a complete range of trip planning and booking services.

If you travel on one of Italy’s faster trains (including Eurocity, Intercity and Eurostar Italia), you will be charged a supplemental fare along with the regular ticket price. If you travel on these trains without your supplemental ticket, you will be fined. Travel on Eurostar Italia requires a reservation. Reservations should be made either through an authorized travel agent or at an Italian rail station. This does not apply when booking High Speed Trains on the internet ( Italy’s slower trains (Rapido, Espresso, Regionale, Inter Regionale and Locale) do not require a reservation or a supplemental ticket.

Boarding the train
To find your platform, which will be listed 10-20 minutes prior to departure, check the small TV screens or the larger schedule boards in the main station area (larger stations only). Four columns will be listed: destination, type of train, platform number and departure time.

Before boarding, remember to validate your ticket by stamping it at one of the small yellow machines located on each train platform. Once you validate your ticket, you must use it for a departure within six hours. If you forget to stamp your ticket before boarding, advise the on-board ticket inspector immediately to avoid a supplementary fee. If you are using a European Railpass, it must be activated at a ticket counter before first use.

It is possible that not all cars on your train will be continuing to your destination. Upon boarding, make sure that the nameplate on your coach (usually posted outside near the door) corresponds to your travel destination. Once inside the coach, look for your reserved seat. If it is a small train and reservations are not required, you may choose any seat. Keep your bags in sight, if possible, and stay alert—many luggage thieves and pickpockets specialize in dashing on and off trains.


Hotel Check In / Check Out

Generally, your room is available after midday, and check-out is usually around 10 am. Sometimes it may be available mid-morning with prior request, but this is in no way guaranteed. If your flight is scheduled to arrive early in the morning, you may have to wait until a room becomes available. If arriving early or departing late, we suggest that you book an extra night's accommodation which will ensure that your room is ready whenever you arrive. All rooms have private facilities wherever possible. In Europe, it is common to have a bathtub equipped with a hand-held shower nozzle instead of a wall-mounted shower head. If you request a double bed, please keep in mind that European double beds are often two twin beds that have been pushed together. Also note that single rooms are often smaller than double rooms, although they cost more per person. Single room availability is limited. Make your reservations early during the busy season, as rooms in cities book well in advance. The hotels we utilise in Europe tend to fall within the 2 to 3 official star rating of the country being visited. We never contract 4 or 5 star properties and some smaller pensions and guesthouses may not have a star rating. Our properties are chosen for their good locations, smaller size and if possible 'family-run' nature.

A couple of rules

In most countries even the smallest quantity of an illegal substance is considered a very serious offence and can carry lengthy jail terms. Avoid any contact with illegal drugs. Don’t put yourself and others at risk and never carry bags or luggage for other people. Any person found to be carrying or using illegal drugs will be asked to leave the trip immediately without the right to any refund.


Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure on their trip. We don't tolerate any form of sexual harassment at Peregrine, either between passengers or involving our leaders or local operators. Sexual relationships (consensual or otherwise) between a leader and a passenger are unacceptable. If you ever feel another person is behaving inappropriately please inform us immediately by contacting the emergency contact number detailed in these trip notes.

City/Tourist Tax

Please note that in several Italian cities and towns, city councils have imposed a tourist tax. This tax is not included in the tour price and must be paid by all guests (except children up to 10 years old), directly to the hotel at check-in or check-out. Revenue from the tax is to finance interventions, maintenance, use and recovery of cultural and environmental heritage within the historical town centres, as well as local public services. The tax is paid by each person for each night's stay in the accommodation facilities located in the city. The tax is also asked of anyone who has booked or paid for their trips though a travel agent or tour operator. Payment has to be made in cash directly to the accommodation and the accommodation is obliged to issue a receipt. The tax amount varies depending on the hotel category, the season and the number of days' stay but is usually between €2 and €5 per person per night.


Due to recent landslides in the area we will currently not be able to walk the full extent of the Via dell'Amore and the coastal section between Manarola and Corniglia on day 3. Our alternative routes will be tailored to the current situation, and your leader will advise of these at the start of the trip. It is likely that the inland routes will be of a higher physical rating. If you would like to opt out it is possible to take the train instead for these sections.
