It seems a little impossible that a place like Valle dei Mulini (Valley of the Watermills) could still exist as it does in the 21st century. One of the lesser travelled walks of the Amalfi Coast, you start your ramble by walking through someone’s front gate. And as you pass through, it can feel as if you’re leaving one world behind and entering another.

The watermills that give the valley its name were paper mills that were built almost a thousand years ago. Amalfi was the centre of Italian papermaking, but now the buildings lie as unguarded and outrageously picturesque ruins. What strikes you most, however, are the local people you’ll see and meet, gathering wild mushrooms, herding animals or carrying great loads of lemons bound for the local limoncello presses. Though the tourism machine that is the Amalfi Coast lies just a few miles away, here you’ll seldom see other foreigners and life seemingly continues as it always has, undisturbed.

Though the walk through the Valle dei Mulini is just one of many you can take on a Peregrine trip, it perhaps sums up the Italy we work hard to show you. Our small groups and local leaders mean we can go to places like Valle dei Mulini without upsetting the local, and unmistakeably Italian, balance.

  • Why we love Italy

    • It seems a little impossible that a place like Valle dei Mulini (Valley of the Watermills) could still exist as it does in the 21st century. One of the lesser travelled walks of the Amalfi Coast, you start your ramble by walking through someone’s front gate. And as you pass through, it can feel as if you’re leaving one world behind and entering another.
    • We roll into the beautiful fishing town of Camogli by local train and alight at the station in the heart of town. We can stay in agriturismos (local farmstays), visit vineyards owned by families not companies and, in short, see Italy as the Italians do
    • Even when we do visit the ‘highlights’ like the Colosseum or Pompeii, we can do so at a pace and in a style that suits you, not a corporate timetable.
    • Truth be told, there are countless companies that can show you the sights and landscapes of Umbria, Tuscany and Rome. But at Peregrine, we try to take you to the Italy that others can’t. The Italy that we know and have fallen in love with.
    • Naples is the ONLY place in the world to get pizza. The Neapolitans invented the things, and while simpler than the ones you get at home, they taste better than any pizza you’ve ever had. You’ll also develop a serious espresso habit!
    • And while it sounds a bit daggy, the local bus in Naples has to be one of the best legs of public transport in the world; villas, terraces, beaches. Breathtaking!

    Safety information

Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure on their trip. We don’t tolerate any form of sexual harassment at Peregrine and Geckos, either between passengers or involving our leaders or local operators. Sexual relationships (consensual or otherwise) between a leader and a passenger are unacceptable. If you ever feel another person is behaving inappropriately please inform us immediately by contacting the emergency contact number detailed in these trip notes.
