The blissfully quiet neighbour to the more famous nearby Samaria gorge, Agia Irini is seven spectacular kilometres of steep-sided mountains nearly touching one another, plane, cyprus and carob trees lining the route, and vultures, eagles and kestrels wheeling on thermals overhead. Hiking here is a serene adventure – after a spring shower the scent of wild mint, thyme and sage linger, and the vivid pink of oleander splashes out at the base of bus-sized boulders, while seasonal waterfalls gurgle down into the gorge’s pools. The path leads downhill, over stones rounded by water, eventually widening and leading to Sougia – a few houses, several tavernas, and the inviting azure of the Mediterranean. And the most richly deserved retsina of your trip.
