The best thing you can do in Aix is stroll. Then stop, refuel, then stroll again. It’s a boulevardier’s paradise, a city of graceful tree-lined avenues, elegant residences, and come-hither cafes. An aimless ramble among its backstreet squares, past sleepy petanque matches and buskers, then down one of France’s finest streetscapes, Cours Mirabeau, makes for an idyllic Aix afternoon. And that refuelling – be sure to stock up on the local treat calissons, almond biscuits coated in icing sugar. Addictive, a bit like Aix itself.
