Twitchers, birders, biologists, naturalists, ornithologists and other assorted bird enthusiasts all find the Falklands of great interest: for its six species of penguin, its raptors, ducks, geese, heron, finches, owls, thrushes, shore and sea birds, and, of course, the majestic black-browed albatross. Locally known as ‘mollymawks’, most of these birds of immense wingspan breed on the Falklands. Their eggs are as big as aluminium cans, their wings well over two metres and they can travel vast distances, often following Antarctica-bound boats. You’ll see them sweep and carve on air currents above the wake with nary a flap, a wondrous, powerful glider and hunter out at sea.
