The Amazon Basin by boat

Past the moto-taxi mayhem of buzzing Iquitos, life swiftly settles back to a more sedate rhythm. The steamy lowland waters of the Amazon around Iquitos swallow all who venture upriver, and giving into it is a highlight of any trip to Peru. Languid stretches of idyllic calm mingle with bursts of rushed excitement: lie back and gaze at the jungle canopy’s fingers reaching out across the calm waters, listen to gently hypnotizing birdsong; then quickly grab your cameras as a pink river dolphin surfaces nearby, or a howler monkey is spotted on the riverbank. But as quickly as the excitement appears, it leaves again – the Amazon returning to its silent, serene grandeur.
