The National Museum may not be huge, but it sure is well stocked. Mali’s culture is a collage, a dynamic meeting of people amidst varying landscapes, and the museum manages to both reflect and explore this. Rich in archeological and anthropological artefacts, with a good array of musical instruments and beautiful mask and textiles, the collection of around 7,000 pieces gives you the lowdown on so many aspects of Malian life. The museum also benefits from an active curatorship, with regular musical evenings, film screenings and design shows. Wherever you travel in Mali, a visit to the National Museum is the ideal introduction to this mesmerising, varied country.
