Avacha volcano ascent (2748m)

Lunch on the edge of the crater of Avacha volcano might be a risky prospect for the nervous, given its recent pyroclastic venting, but most Kamchatka trekkers will be too taken with the magnificent panorama before them to mind the occasional deep-earth rumble. The Pacific Ocean, Petropavlovsk, Koryaksky Volcano and Nalycheva Valley are all in clear sight and, beyond the odd sulfurous whiff, you’ll draw in pure mountain air and dazzle your retinas with the scenic wonders of unsullied sea and life-laden lands spread out from toe-tip to horizon. A picnic spot worthy of the gods.
