A treasure of Lebanon and one of the Middle East’s great sights, Baalbek’s ruins are on an extraordinary scale, as powerful a demonstration of the glory of Rome as one could hope to see. The Temple of Jupiter’s columns remain the largest in the world, some 23 metres in height. The Temple of Venus, meanwhile, is larger than the Athens Parthenon. The ruins stand on monstrous foundation stones, some of which are estimated to weigh more than 1,000 tonnes. Standing under these magnificent creations, you’ll understand why some in medieval times thought Baalbek must have been built by giants.
