The Bai traditional minority tribe of Dali

The Bai traditional minority tribe of Dali

The monastery-dotted Cangshan mountain backdrop to Dali is as charming as the town’s cobblestone streets, ancient stone hamlets and laid-back vibe. However, it’s perhaps the ethnic Bai locals, renowned throughout China for their traditional dress and craftsmanship, that most holds a traveller’s fascination. Cycling through villages and strolling around town, you’ll meet these colourfully dressed and graceful people, and while rounding the Er Hai Lake, witness their traditional employment of tethered cormorants to fish.
