Cerro Torre's granite spike

A towering spike of granite, buffeted in its upper reaches by tempestuous winds and capped by an infamously treacherous mushroom icecap, Cerro Torre was long considered unclimbable, and debate still rages about the first ascent. The brutal gradient of the unforgiving mountain is never more apparent than when you’re up close and personal, your tent pitched at its base, snug between the grand pinnacle and vast fields of continental ice. Whether at night under the brilliant blanket of stars or during white-bright daytime, if there’s a more spectacular campsite around, we’ve yet to see it.
