Christ the Redeemer

Christ the Redeemer is so ingrained in Rio’s iconography that it’s a surprise to learn it’sbeen in place for less than a century. 40 metres of soapstone atop the granite hunchbacked hulk of Corcovado Mountain, the statue has some of the city’s best views, and a hilltop tour is essential stuff for any visitor to Rio. Take the rack railway up to share the full panoramic sweep of ‘the marvellous city’.
