The cliff-cut road to the border town of Zhangmu

The cliff-cut road to the border town of Zhangmu

Unlike anywhere else in Tibet, Zhangmu in the foothills of the Himalayas is positively subtropical, with dense forest, waterfalls and a relatively warm sub tropical climate. However, driving into the town you might be looking back up to the frigid mountains, rather than down to the lush valley floor – the descent into Zhangmu is on a steep narrow road cut into cliff face. If you don’t like heights, sit on the left, keep your eyes shut and try not think of reincarnation.
