The colonnaded street of Apamea

In a country that greedily boasts far more than its fair share of spectacular ruins, walking the Cardo Maximus (mainstreet) of Apamea ranks as one of the ultimate classical experiences. Nearly 2km in length, magnificently colonnaded and intelligently restored, Apamea’s main drag is, thrillingly, more often than not virtually empty of visitors. Walking the length of this symphony of granite set in wild moorlands may be the most graceful stroll in Syria. Walk it, then argue over which is your favourite – Apamea or its spectacular desert cousin, Palmyra.
