Fish dishes are very popular, and one particular dish even has its own annual contest. Beer Fish is stewed with beer and mixed with other ingredients like tomatoes, garlic, chilli, celery and ginger. It has a tender, juicy, fresh and spicy flavour; and every year the Beer Fish contest sees local chefs come together to try create the best dish.
One of the most popular snacks is Yangshuo's famous rice noodles, which are simple cheap and delicious. The noodles are prepared with gravy, fried peanuts or soybeans, chopped scallions and slices of beef.
Yangshuo has many colourful and lively markets, where you can buy everything from local handicrafts to agricultural tools. Markets are a place for locals to meet and socialise, so excited chatter fills the air as people buy and trade with a hefty dose of bargaining thrown in.
