The Wachau is the mighty Danube’s prettiest stretch, and cruising by boat is the perfect way to see it. The great river here has helped create and sculpt an area of outrageous beauty and bounty. All around, hills coated with terraced Riesling vineyards and apricot orchards reach down to the river, where baroque and gothic piles sit grandly overlooking the waters. Castle connoisseurs are floating in hog-heaven here, the extraordinary abundance in one short stretch of the Danube leading to lots of ‘oh that’s my favourite...or maybe that one’ proclamations. Majestic Schönbühel, imposing Spitz, forlorn Aggstein, take your pick, but don’t blink – here comes another one...
