The 'Dead Cities'

It’s not every day you get to wander through a town that was abandoned some 1,500 years ago. Even rarer is the chance to do so without the tourist hordes. But Syria’s dead cities are a forgotten, hidden corner of the country, and a walk around one of the many old Byzantine towns and villages is an exercise in feeling gloriously alone in the world, and the perfect counterpoint to the hustle and rush of city souqs. Eerie and brilliantly intact, a walk around Serjilla or one of the other sites, you’ll soon be entertaining boys-own adventure fantasies of being an explorer stumbling upon hitherto unknown ancient remains.
