An exploration of Kochi’s collection of islands and mainland neighbourhoods can resemble a languid, tropical session of the United Nations: a Portuguese mansion there, Chinese fishing nets here, then English houses, a Dutch cemetery and Jewish synagogues make appearances elsewhere. The history-rich streets make for a consistently fascinating ramble, as photogenic as you could hope for. But be sure to be at the waterfront come high tide: Kochi’s cantilevered fishing nets are an intricate tool and when in use are a visually arresting sight, a little like the city itself.
