Eat fermented shark, Reykjavik

Close to where the whale watching tours depart in Reykjavik, an elderly man sells cooked fish from an old boat shed. Here you can also source a fine selection of fermented shark, the most pronounced and proud example of Icelandic cuisine. Definitely an acquired taste but central to any authentic local experience, eating the pungent grey chucks of flesh mightn’t be a mouth-watering delight for anyone but a Viking, but all over town you can watch locals down it by the handful.
