How to feel ludicrously, deliciously indulgent? Easy: luxuriate the day away on a Nile cruise, now and again managing to haul yourself away from the cabin, deck or pool to check out several of earth’s great ancient sights. Edfu first: 100 or so lazy kilometres from Luxor, the Temple of Horus at Edfu is as perfectly preserved as a Royal Mummy, with some of the finest wall reliefs and statues you’ll find this side of Cairo’s Egyptian Museum. Lost to the Saharan sands for centuries, this is a gloriously intact rediscovery. Drift another 80km and the Temple of Kom Ombo rears up on the Nile’s riverbank. The ruins here are as beautiful and picturesquely sited as any, but the talking point is the crocodiles. Thankfully mummified, and deified, it’s been a long time since they roamed the waters here. Just in case though, might be worthwhile getting shipshape, and back to the pool, deck or cabin in time for sunset.
