Namibia’s largest national park has a wealth of watering holes, and a dawn safari is the time to witness Etosha’s amazing congregation of animals. In the cool early morning, mammals make their way here, from elusive big cats like leopards and cheetahs, to giraffes, wildebeest and springboks. Here they drink in their dozens, many only catching a quick few gulps before bolting back into the shadows of the mopane woodlands and sweetgrass plains. Not the elephants however. When they arrive, all others make way, and these grand beasts wallow in front of you, slowly taking their fill, their huffs and puffs filling the air, their enormous presence filling your vision. And for the full watering hole experience, keep your eyes trained on them when night descends – floodlighting means you can enjoy an evening drink while the animals do likewise.
