Travelling in West Africa is not without its bumps and bother, so, when you can, enjoy the woozy low-key charm of a strip of golden sand stretching out into the Atlantic. Grand Popo in Benin’s west is the country’s finest beach, a long coconut palm-fringed treat of a place where you find time happily idling away amidst the town’s peaceful pleasures. Walk the beach, lounge with a book, and use the place as a base to visit neighbouring attractions. There’s not a huge amount to do in Grand Popo; that’s exactly the charming point of the place.
