Guggenheim Museum

The cultural catalyst for Bilbao’s modern renaissance, and the latest entry in the pantheon of Europe’s great museums. The collection of modern masters is formidable, with, among others, Kandinsky, Mondrian, Picasso, Cézanne, and Warhol all represented, and of course the collection’s mascot, Jeff Koons’ Puppy. But it’s the building’s stunning, almost hypnotic design that’s the thing. A tour round the Guggenheim’s exterior is essential: the play of light on the voluptuous curves of glass, titanium and limestone; the building’s reflection shivering in the adjacent Nervion River; the seemingly random contours at times resembling a fish or a ship – motifs that both complement and contribute to Bilbao’s rich maritime history.
