Khorog's bazaar and Botanical Gardens

Khorog's bazaar and Botanical Gardens

On the mountainous border with Afghanistan, the small town of Khorog and the capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan Austonomous Oblast (GBAO) lies in the stunning valley of the Gunt River. Home to the world’s highest botanical garden, an Afghani market and the most educated townsfolk in Central Asia, the university town sits snug in spectacular mountain scenery and full panoramic view of their less developed and warring brethren across the border. Education and high culture, as much as the magnificent scenery, have influenced Khorog for a long time and the town has a history of going to great lengths to get it; the piano on display at Khorog’s regional museum was carried over the mountains from Osh by ten Russian soldiers. It took a back-breaking two months, but you can see it upright and relaxed in one of the most rugged and beautiful mountain settings in the world.
