Kumasi - former capital of the Ashanti Kingdom

Kumasi - former capital of the Ashanti Kingdom

Kumasi, heartland of the Ashanti, has a rich and fascinating history, but for some local shot-in-the-arm excitement, there’s only one place to head: Kejetia Market. One of West Africa’s largest and liveliest, Kejetia is an uncontainable, pulsating collage of tin-roofed stalls selling everything imaginable, and then some. This is virtually a city in itself, and all you can do is surrender to its ebullient, addictive charms: lose yourself among the market’s unmappable lanes and alleys and take in the colourful cloths, exotic fetish items, Ashanti sandals and intricate jewellery, all sold in dizzying numbers amidst friendly hawkers’ cries and the thick scents that drift in from the nearby street food stalls.
