Lake Tana's ancient monasteries and churches

The island monasteries of Lake Tana feel as fabled as the famed source of the Blue Nile itself: the large, calm lake in the Ethiopian highlands is scattered with reed boats and low lying islands, built upon since the thirteenth century to create a beautiful host of monasteries, churches and reliquaries. One is said to be the former home of the Ark of the Covenant and it’s easy to believe that other treasures are still hidden within their walls. Alongside the robed monks-in-residence, experience the lake’s past glories and be immersed in this magical, colourfully frescoed world, all cooled by the breeze across Lake Tana.
