Mahdia’s medina and 16th Century Borg el-Kebir fortress

Mahdia’s medina and 16th Century Borg el-Kebir fortress

Pack away any map or guidebook, and give in to the low-key charm of Mahdia’s medina. In many ways the antithesis to the frenetic commerce of others, the medina helps make Mahdia one of Tunisia’s most pleasant coastal towns. Here the emphasis is on life being quietly played out, seemingly unchanging across generations: children play in the street; potent little Turkish coffees are lingered over in shaded squares; the emerald sea and quiet beach occasionally make an appearance at the end of an alleyway. It’s not the country’s largest medina, but small is beautiful here, and an aimless wander is an afternoon well spent.
