Medieval town of Motovun

Take one postcard-pretty medieval town on Croatia's Istrian Peninsula, add widescreen views from ramparts across vineyards and forests to the distant Adriatric, and complete with some of the fruits from the land - particularly truffles washed down with white wine - and you've got the perfect recipe for an afternoon of indulgence, Croatian-style. You could be forgiven for thinking you'd wandered into Italy, with Italian-influenced cuisine, truffles to rival those of Croatia's neighbour, and a landscape reminiscent of Tuscany. But that would do your hosts a disservice, for the local charm and welcome extended is unmistakeably Croatian. It would be rude not to raise a glass and salute it - zivjeli!
