Look familiar? Monument Valley, a region of the Colorado Plateau, has starred in over 50 Hollywood Westerns as well as Forrest Gump and episodes of Doctor Who. Monument Valley is characterised by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 300 metres above the valley floor. Its vivid red colour comes from iron oxide exposed in the weathered siltstone and the darker, blue-grey rocks get their colour from manganese oxide.
