Morteratsch Glacier

The largest glacier in the Bernina Range of the Bündner Alps, Morteratsch Glacier packs an awesome punch when you’re up close and personal with it. A horizontal expanse of some seven kilometres, Morteratsch is a heaving grey-white mass, hugging the eastern slopes of Piz Bernina, the highest peak in the Eastern Alps, and the culminating point of the Danube drainage basin. The views of the glacier, and the valley it has sculpted, are astounding, and as a bonus at certain times of year, the bold – and skilled – can ski a 10-km run on the glacier.
