The mud-brick kasbahs of Ait Benhaddou

Filmmakers are drawn to the fortified city Ait Benhaddou like moths to a flame. And why not: the ancient citadel rises up from the desert like a legend, all Arabian Nights exotica and romance, its red-brown mud walls and countless towers flaming in the evening sun. Looking out on this, the Berber caravan route from Marrakech to the Sahara, an age-old view of surrounding hills, river and oases, and it’s difficult not to come over a little bit Lawrence of Arabia.
