Nizwa - former centre of trade, religion, education and art

The former Omani capital, NIzwa remains the country’s Islamic heartland and is a fascinating place to visit, a necessary destination for those wishing to gain a true understanding of the country. The city is dominated by its fort, a grand 17th century structure whose circular tower provides both a useful point of orientation for city strolls and a great aspect for outstanding views of streets, many minarets and the lush date groves that border Nizwa. The city at ground level makes for satisfying exploration, with the call to prayer filling the air and the artisans of the souk both divertingly exotic. But it’s the fort that really captivates, and is instructive of Oman as a whole – architecturally rich and chronicling an eventful history, the imposing and austere exterior belies an interior of unexpected complexity and ingeniousness.
